Estimates total daily calorie requirement by multiplying an individual's basal metabolic rate (BMR) by an activity factor.
The result estimates total daily energy expenditure. Multiplying BMR by an activity factor converts resting energy needs into a daily calorie target: sedentary ≈ 1.2× BMR, light ≈ 1.375×, moderate ≈ 1.55×, very active ≈ 1.725×, extremely active ≈ 1.9×.
Daily calorie requirements are the foundation of nutrition planning; estimating them from BMR and activity lets clinicians set rational energy targets rather than relying on guesswork.
A 40-year-old man has a resting energy expenditure (Mifflin-St Jeor) of 1,730 kcal/day and is moderately active.
Inputs:
Daily calorie requirement = 1,730 × 1.55 = 2,682 kcal/day.
An activity factor reflects how much a person moves relative to resting energy expenditure — roughly 1.2 for sedentary, 1.375 light, 1.55 moderate, 1.725 active, and 1.9 extremely active individuals.
BMR (or REE) can be estimated with the Mifflin-St Jeor or Harris-Benedict calculator, which use sex, age, weight, and height.
